 Jiading Bamboo Carving

嘉定竹刻起源于明代中期,是由朱鹤、朱缨、朱稚征祖孙三代开创的一个竹刻艺术流派,至今已有五百多年的历史,在中国竹刻史上享有很高的地位。作品雕刻之精美、题材之丰富、内涵之深厚,深受国内外收藏家的喜爱。嘉定竹刻以刀为笔,将书、画、诗、文、印诸多艺术融于一体。作为会通文人审美和匠作精神的典范,在其诞生之后长期影响着江南民间雕刻艺术和清代康雍乾盛世宫廷艺匠的发展,是优秀江南文化的缩影。

Jiading Bamboo Carving originated in the middle of the Ming Dynasty (the first half of the 16th century) and has a history of more than five hundred years. Initiated by three generations of the Zhu family in Jiading, Zhu He, Zhu Ying and

Zhu Zhizheng, it occupied a very high position in the history of Chinese bamboo carving and has been carried on till today. Collectors both at home and abroad treasured it deeply for its exquisite craftsmanship, rich subject matters and profound connotations. Integrating the arts of calligraphy, painting, poetry, literature and seal carving by using knives instead of brushes, Jiading Bamboo Carving was taken as a model of perfect combination of literati's aesthetics and craftsman's spirit. It influenced the development of both the later folk carvings in Jiangnan area and the Qing court craftsmanship during the Kangxi, Yongzheng and Qianlong reign periods. This is an epitome of the outstanding Jiangnan culture.

阴刻

Carving in intaglio

浅刻,刻痕很浅,往往需要在高光下才能看清刀痕的一种刻法,为阴刻之最浅者。大多用于臂搁和扇骨,以表现画的笔墨意趣为主。

SHALLOWW CARVING,it is a very shallow carving, the marks of which can only be seen clearly under a strong light sometime, and the shallowest is the carving in intaglio. This technique is commonly adopted in carving bamboo arm rests and fan frames to show the charms of brushwork and ink of Chinese painting.

陷地深刻,这是一种以光洁的竹材表面为“地”, 所雕图像全部深陷于 “地”中的深刻技法。刻得最深的,可达五六层。主要用于笔筒,以雕刻蔬菜、花卉为主。

DEEP SUNKEN CARVING, it is a kind of deep carving with all the engravings deeply done under a smoothly polished surface (or "ground"), and the deepest engraving can have five or six layers. It is mainly used for carving  bamboo brush holder with designs of vegetables and flowers.

浮/雕

- Relief Carving -

浅浮雕,在雕刻层次、深浅方面,介于高浮雕与 薄地阳文之间,使作品呈现出一定的起伏和层次感。

SHALLOW RELIEF CARVING,this relief carving is deeper than the ground-scraped relief carving but shallower

than the high relief carving, bringing the

works a certain sense of ups and downs and layering.

深浮雕,又称“高浮雕”,雕刻深厚,立体感强,画面呈现较大的空间深度。

DEEP RELIEF CARVING, also known as "high relief carving", is deeply executed, giving the image a strong sense of three dimensions and a great depth.

透雕,又称“镂空雕”,将画面以外空白处镂空,或层次之间透空,使景物层次丰富、突出,具有很强的立体感。

OPENWORK CARVING, by hollowing out the blank or carving the pattern with opening layers, also known as "hollow carving" gives prominences to the multi-layered and three-dimensional effect for the design.

- BAMBOO ROOT CARVING -

圆雕即立体雕,大多以竹根为材,

雕成四面可以观赏的立体雕刻品。

底部留款识,以文房器具和摆件为主。

Round carving, it is a three-dimensional sculpting

mostly out of bamboo roots. Most of the works with 

marks on the bottom are literati studio utensils and 

decorative obiects.
